Multivitamins and minerals are a combination of many different vitamins and minerals that are normally found in foods and other natural sources.

Mechanism of Action

ARROCAL TAB : is a high potency calcium-magnesium supplement designed to meet the increased body requirements when diet alone fails to provide the recommended amounts of these vital minerals. For optimum absorption and utilization of both calcium and magnesium in the body, SAMCAL TABalso contains optimum amounts of vitamin D3 and zinc.

There is a life-long, daily nutritional need for calcium. Nevertheless, epidemiological data from the developing world show that the average dietary calcium intake of people (400 mg/day) is well below the recommended dietary allowances. The body draws 60-70% of its calcium requirements from milk and milk products. It is difficult to meet the body's requirements from other sources if dairy products are ignored. Consequently, when the requirements of calcium are at their highest during certain physiological circumstances (eg, pregnancy, lactation, after menopause), calcium supplementation becomes imperative.

Calcium: Calcium, the most plentiful mineral in the body, is required for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth, for muscle contraction, nerve transmission, blood clotting, stability of cell membrane and regulation of blood pressure.

Calcium + Magnesium: Magnesium works in close balance with calcium. Calcium homeostasis is poorly maintained by the body without magnesium. Deficiency of magnesium leads to excessive urinary excretion, hypocalcemia, which is not corrected by increased calcium (and vitamin D) intake and neuromuscular problems which often occur due to upset of Ca:Mg ratio.

In addition, combined calcium and magnesium supplementation helps prevent hypertensive disorders of pregnancy eg, PIH, preeclampsia and eclampsia; intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR); osteopenia (eg, osteoporosis) and dental caries; and kidney stone formation.

Vitamin D: Magnesium deficiency reduces the synthesis and release of the parathyroid hormone (PTH), which in turn affects the conversion of vitamin D into its active metabolite, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. The active vitamin D metabolite is essential for the absorption and utilization of both calcium and magnesium.

The increased need for calcium and magnesium simultaneously increases the need for vitamin D. In the absence of vitamin D, both calcium and magnesium are poorly absorbed from the intestine, calcium movement into and out of the bone is affected and increased calcium intake does not affect the blood and tissue calcium levels.

Zinc: Zinc deficiency severely affects the body's ability to stimulate (in combination with vitamin D) DNA synthesis in the bone cells without which the mineralization of the bone is affected; to synthesis (in partnership with magnesium) collagen and proteins, which in turn affects every tissue including the bone.

INDICATIONS

During the active phase of growth and development of the skeleton ie, childhood, adolescence and early adulthood; pregnancy and lactation; prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, particularly in women after menopause and elderly men; fractures and immobilization due to prolonged illness; long-term steroid therapy; premenstrual syndrome; and dietary deficiencies ie, malnutrition and weight-control dieting.

Dosage

ARROCAL TAB dosage depends primarily upon the nutritional status of the patient and the situation requiring calcium supplementation. However, 2-3 tabs/day should meet the supplemental requirements in most conditions.

Children (1-10 years) would require ½ to 1 tab/day.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach (Best taken 15-20 min before meals.).

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in the formulation of.

Special Precautions

ARROCAL TAB should be taken only under medical supervision if the patient suffers from chronic hypochlorhydria, impaired renal function or has a history of renal calculi

Side Effects

ARROCAL TAB is absolutely safe for all ages.

Some patients, particularly older persons, may experience slight abdominal bloating for a few days after starting therapy which resolves by itself.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use of calcium with iron and tetracyclines may reduce their absorption. This should be avoided.
